Many people have taken to social media to address the recent Lifetime documentary Surviving R. Kelly along with the testimonies, accusations, and societal deficits represented therein. As there is a great deal of trauma represented in the lives of women featured in the documentary and members of the Kelly family, the question lingers: should R. Kelly receive mental health counseling? Of course criminal charges would likely lead to incarceration but is there also a need for counseling for Kelly? Television star Iyanla Vanzant has denied Kelly’s said request to appear on her show Iyanla: Fix My Life prior to the premiere of the documentary. However, in her recent Sway’s Universe interview, Iyanla stated “I would never ever condone, or justify anything that he’s been accused of doing…but locking him up in jail…it’s not the answer…he’s sick.” Healing is needed for everyone involved in the atrocious acts detailed in the Surviving R. Kelly documentary- our girls need help, our boys need help, our women, and men need help; so what do you think about R. Kelly, should he receive mental health counseling too?
